Wasps
build a nest made from chewed wood usually inside some form of harborage
for protection, although the European wasp will build its nest in a bush
or tree. If left undisturbed or undiscovered the nest can become larger
than a football and contain as many as 10,000 individuals. During late spring
and early summer wasps can be the gardener's friend, for they will feed
on other insects, and if left alone mostly pose no threat. Usually it is
not until late summer or early autumn that they can become a nuisance as
their numbers increase. If agitated wasps can become very aggressive and
are capable of stinging repeatedly; some people have been known to go into
anaphylactic shock. In extreme cases this can lead to death. People who
are known to be at risk of an allergic reaction to wasp and bee stings usually
carry an anti-histamine injection.
Control: The application of an insecticidal powder injected directly into the nest, and if required the complete removal of the nest. These treatments must be carried out by a competent, trained operative.
