Thatched Roof PestsPests in Thatched Roofs

If you are unlucky enough to have a rat or a squirrel in your thatched roof, you know only too well just how devastating this can be. The amount of damage these rodents can do to a thatch over night is enormous, with great handfuls of material being pushed out and sticking through the wire netting as they search for a route of escape; which, as it happens, is put there to stop them getting in, in the first place!

And of course if you can see evidence of them outside, then they will have access to inside; where they can and will cause havoc by also chewing plumbing, electric cables, etc. which in turn is extremely likely to result in fire.

So, how did they get in? In the case of squirrels, their access to the roof initially will be via overhanging or adjacent trees or power lines. Once on the thatch they will need to find a way in, usually via a hole in the wire netting which may have been caused by a tree branch rubbing against the roof or poorly fitted netting in the first place or simply old netting that has rusted. In the case of rats, they too will use the same method of access. However the rat, unlike the squirrel, will also gain access via the dwelling. So check the door gaps, and where service pipes enter the walls etc. See my FREE ADVICE (Rats). Thatched roofs also can become a haven for all sorts of unwelcome insects including Cluster flies and Wasps etc.
