Moles
are solitary creatures only coming together to mate between February and
June where the female gives birth to one litter per year of 2-7 young. The
young moles are mature after 5 weeks and then go off on their own and live
for about 3 years. Moles cause damage to lawns, golf courses, and crops;
they are notoriously awkward to trap. DIY shops sell wind mills and buzzing
devices that are placed in the ground designed to "chase" away
the mole. However they soon become oblivious to this, much in the same way
that people get used to living near a railway.
Control: Control can be achieved by professional trapping, smoking or the use of aluminium phosphide gas which is strictly controlled and requires a specialist licence.
